Later that evening, Michael confessed as much to Caleb.

“What do you think brought out all my awkwardness around Mrs. Hawkins?” he asked. They were, by now, back at the Country Corner relaxing on the porch. Caleb, sitting with his Bible open on his lap, said he didn’t have a clue.

Michael had his Bible, too. He held it, still closed, in his hand. There was something else bothering him. He related the feelings he had experienced with Sandy earlier—the overwhelming desire for Sandy not to feel rejected because of the past weekend.

“Think for a minute, my friend. Can you remember anything from your childhood that might account for these feelings? God may be shedding a little light on something that, if it isn’t healed, could hinder your walk of faith.”

He frowned, eyes squinted. “I’m not sure I know what you mean, Caleb.”

“Do you remember feeling rejected any time in the past? If you do, then maybe there is some correlation between then and now. Of course, it could be just an isolated incident and nothing to worry about.”

The air was growing cool, so they headed inside. Michael sat down on the couch next to Caleb. He ran his hand through his hair, smoothing it in place, then cupped his chin in his right hand, resting his head. He chewed on his fingernail. After a moment, he stood up, walked three steps, and about-faced. “There is something. I can remember a time or two when I felt rejected by my parents, especially by my father. I tried reaching out to them for attention. It never came, though.”

“Michael, please don’t think I’m prying, but would you tell me about one of those incidents? I have my reasons for asking.”

“Sure, I don’t mind. It happened so long ago, it doesn’t bother me anymore.” Caleb said nothing, only raised an eyebrow. “The one that stands out the most was when I was about four or five. My parents used to take me shopping with them whenever they went.” He started a slow pace back and forth. “One day I heard them talking about going, so naturally, I expected to go along. I waited and waited for them to tell me to get ready. Instead, they asked me to go to the backyard to look for something. I agreed, but tried to hurry so I could get ready. While I was out there, a noise in the front caught my attention. All of a sudden, I had a queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach.” He paused, threatened by those same emotions. His forehead felt hot and his hands, clammy.

“I ran as fast as my little legs could carry me. Down the hill and around the side of the house to the front yard, I ran. By then I was screaming at the top of my lungs, waving my hands over my head. I remember thinking, They’re leaving me . . . they’re leaving me . . . I got there in time to watch them back out of the driveway and head on down the road .
